VDSL

What is VDSL?

Dot IT VDSL is exceptionally fast business broadband Internet which depending upon your location should allow Internet bandwidth between 15Mb and 40Mb downstream and up to 2Mb or 10Mb upstream.

How does VDSL work?

VDSL uses a fibre connection between your local BT exchange and your local BT node and a copper connection from the node to your premises. By bringing fibre closer to you, the speed which can be provided is increased over conventional ADSL but note that the actual connection speed will be dependent upon the length and quality of this final copper link. This may also be known as FTTC or Fibre to the Cabinet.

Can I get VDSL?

There are very limited areas with VDSL at the moment. All other customers will have to wait until 2010 when the product will start being rolled out nationally.

What equipment will I require?

The service is installed on an analogue line (as with ADSL), but unlike ‘wires-only’ ADSL, a BT engineer will visit and install a dedicated face plate on the analogue line together with a BT owned VDSL modem. Dot IT will provide a 4 port Dot IT owned and managed Ethernet router behind the modem giving normal wired router functionality (NAT, no-NAT, port forwarding etc) so please ensure that you have two spare power sockets for these devices to use. Please contact us should you require a wireless router.

Can I upgrade my current ADSL to VDSL?

It is possible to upgrade ADSL to VDSL although our recommendation is that you run both circuits simultaneously for a while to ensure that you are happy with the performance of VDSL before ceasing your ADSL or converting it to a back-up circuit at £15.00 per month. Dot IT does not charge to upgrade your current ADSL to VDSL but you will require a Dot IT managed and owned Ethernet router. Should you be unhappy with the performance of VDSL and we are unable to resolve this then we will be able to revert your VDSL back to ADSL Max or 2+.

How can I move an existing ADSL to Dot IT’s VDSL service?

Your existing ADSL service can be migrated (transferred) to Dot IT VDSL by obtaining a ‘MAC’ (Migration Authorisation Code) from your existing provider. However, please see our comments above regarding upgrading ADSL to VDSL.

How long will the service take to install?

The service will normally be installed 5-8 days from the day that the order has been accepted by Dot IT / BT Wholesale. Please remember that the service requires a BT Openreach engineer to visit and it is important that this appointment is not missed.
